the gate agent doesn't need to notice anything on the paper boarding pass---the computer reconciles the flight which alerts them if a companion earner isn't on board before the doors are closed.
the ticketing/checkin agents SOMETIMES ask. Maybe 1 out of 100 times. Even then, if my companion motions towards the security line and say the companion earner (me) is already in line, or already at the gate, they go ahead and print their ticket/check their bags without an issue.
