The comment about this order being a 747 replacement is probably just poor reporting.

A large chunk of this order must be for growth. Out of the bmi slots acquired, the expectation was that at least 15 or so will be released for long-haul so that's quite a lot of growth, and many of the new routes will probably not be rotations that can be done in 24 hours.
