Now in Brazil. With the help of a Portuguese speaker we were able to check in on line. I did not dare risk tablet/phone check in (given previous experiences in various countries).
All settings (FF nos, seats) stuck perfectly. We have paper boarding passes in hand. Have decided to go with UA MP FF nos, even though fare class doesn't (in theory) earn UA miles. Last thing we need is orphan TAM credits.
From what I saw, I recommend against trying this w/o a Portuguese speaker at hand.
