The tunnel/highway actually is the fastest way to get to most hotels at many hours of the day. Limos take it all the time and they have no ulterior motive. And as others have said, it's not really taking you out of your way very much, maybe two miles at 60 mph and avoiding many traffic lights. So if you're concerned, tell him not to take the tunnel, but I really wouldn't worry about it.
