I'm virtually certain it's the DL method. The SFO->AMS->SFO came to around $80 per ticket, I believe, and I think this is considerably lower than what KLM would have charged. I don't have the exact figures because I added additional connecting flights, which caused the fees to go up considerably.
I see. This is very interesting indeed. Surely an unintended loophole, that DL will likely quickly close now that it's in the open...though "quickly" by DL standards may be a few years (hopefully so ).

I just checked, and on SFO-AMS return, with AF/KL the taxes are about $988 return (wow!), so if it was $80, then indeed that was the DL method and over 10x less than it would be with KL/AF.

Great find! Now let's see for how long it sticks around and works..
