KL was willing to put it on hold for 48 hours pending receipt of miles into my account. Yes, I have 0 miles with KL.

I'm virtually certain it's the DL method. The SFO->AMS->SFO came to around $80 per ticket, I believe, and I think this is considerably lower than what KLM would have charged. I don't have the exact figures because I added additional connecting flights, which caused the fees to go up considerably.
