I agree .. there is a breaking point the the decision and £1k may be it for me too (although I'm in the US ).
It is just slightly inconvenient and can be a lot of fun if planned well.

I didn't find ex-EU a problem, albeit with children a few years older. We did CDG last year and took BA from LHR, and overnighted in the airport hotel. We are doing MAD as ex-EU this year, and will make the most of a night there.

The ironic thing is that BA sell some exBCN/MAD Y fares on BA metal at almost 50% less than those originating from LHR.
