I never went on a longhaul holiday with my parents. In fact, I never left the country with my parents, ever.

My kids will clearly have a different life, but that is 10% down to my Avios mountain and 90% down to both of their parents having good careers in the City.

There ARE ways of using Avios well if you are short of cash - my £1.50 of taxes airberlin NYC-BER ticket the other week proves it. In general, though, you need to be doing OK in life just to pay the taxes and charges these days, and if you're on the UK median salary of £26,500 then Avios is unlikely to be for you (unless you use airberlin, Aer Lingus or stick to Reward Flight Saver routes).
