a.) Pre-sale. AA buys predetermined minimum amount of seats at a pre-determined (and indeed probably lower) price off CX and resells them for whatever they can get from customers. Almost like a discount group travel company.
b.) Minimum guaranteed sold: AA is given a specific # of seats to fill, at a specified value per ticket paid to CX, and AA is required to pay at least that minimum amount to CX equal to the minimum number of seats X pre-determined price.
c.) Free for all: CX and AA can sell the seats at will. I don't know if their reservations systems is synched but if so this is possible. AA will have a pre-determined price with CX that they pay CX for each seat they sell.
However, the gist is correct - I'm not privy to the agreement between CX and AA, but I have to imagine AA is paying CX less than we are for those tickets. Although then again...given my impression of the poor way AA has been run for years....maybe AA is actually OVERpaying for those tickets! The specifics of their agreements are beyond my knowledge but I'm quite sure CX is getting paid, even if it's less than normal.
One question --
Do CX/AA have the JV agreement like UA/NH on TPAC flights?
