Just don't get the logic of pushing upgrades to the gate when those there already have a bunch of customer side tasks to perform.
J7 does seem like a lot of room to accomodate an SE.
Having said that, as a user of Latitude passes, I have certainly benefited from asking for the next flight home from YYZ or YUL. This feature is, for me, what makes the latitude pass worthwhile. (Going East I use Flex passes since I know I won't try and change the flight.)
