As you note, it is very situational. In our case, there are two of us, and we're both EXP. We get SWU upgrades consistently. So, if Y is $1190, and J is $3790, we can fly three trips in J (assuming upgrades clear) for the cost of one paid J trip. For us, the extra expenditure doesn't make sense. For others, I think that the reduction in the delta will make sense.
