Why didn't you put the "domestic" connecting flight on the same award ticket?

You cannot combine PNRs but calling should allow you to get preferred set as together with a single traveling companion. You can also ask the phone agent to link the PNRs, which doesn't do much but does give you an argument to be kept together in IROPs.
