Please forgive this part of my post as being off topic for the thread. As far as my irritation with USAirways, believe me, it was for far more than just one bad day! I am about the most loyal person on the planet, and I was Gold, Platinum, and Chairman's Preferred through US from 1985 through 2008, 23 years!
US reduced the size of first and business class sections across their fleet, they reduced the benefits for all Preferred members except Chairman's, they broke written promises (to me), they allowed their planes to deteriorate due to cancelled or deferred interior maintenance, they reduced service to my home airport, they reduced and then tried to eliminate the minimum mileage per segment, they reduced the number of SWU's for Golds and Plats (and made them more restricted and expensive to use) for they continually reduced meal service in F, they reduced seat pitch across their fleet, and a whole lot more. US did not just irritate one of their most loyal customers, they almost literally pushed me out the door!
The funny thing is, with the changes in the last two years from Delta, and the pending merger with AA, I am actually considering moving my loyalty back to US for next year, after the US/AA merger.
No, the situation you have illustrated does not qualify for LNF. Reason 1, LNF requires the first rez to be no more than 24 hours before the second rez. Reason 2, Marriott will not compete with itself by allowing LNF claims for a marriott.com rez against another Marriott rez through any Marriott channel. Another reason is that you can always modify the earlier rez to the lower rate by simply putting in a call to Marriott reservations.
Ahhh yes.. I see the 24 hour bit.
But as far as marriott competing against itself...

What information do I need to send to Marriott to help verify my claim?
"The claim form outlines all required information for your claim. You will need to provide Marriott with specific information depending on where you found the comparison rate to help us verify your claim.
If your comparison rate was found on a non-Marriott Internet Web site (for example: Hotels.com, Expedia.com, Travelocity.com), your claim must include the URL of the page where you saw the lower rate.
If your comparison rate was found on a
Marriott Internet Web site, through Marriott Worldwide Reservations, at a Marriott hotel, or through a travel agency or travel management company, your claim must include a Marriott confirmation number."
I totally hear you about the airlines... I don't have much experience buying tickets but I have flown quite a bit nonrev/jumpseating. Until 09 I could count on business.. towards the end it was usually middle seat in the back. They too pushed me out with their low pay, lousy schedule and lack of respect. I'm now flying a private jet for a private individual. It is SWEET!
