It's got nothing to do with the reasons you've stated.
I've never registered and I've got no intention of registering. In the event that some sort of natural disaster occurred in whatever country I was in, it's much more likely that family and/or friends would be alerting DFAT and have far better knowledge of my movements. For updates, I'd rather be getting news on the ground than relayed to me from Canberra. Given that, why would I waste my time on something of such limited utility?
But hey, if it makes you feel safe, then I guess it's worth it.
