your "compensation" was the free bus ticket - which they didn't need to legally provide you, but they did it, so respect to them. Not a lot else they can do. You accepted that compensation, so in claiming anything else, not a leg to stand on. If the free ticket was also 'off the record' as you suggest, contacting Megabus could land those helpful employees in it and prevent them from helping others in similar situations in the future.
