Completely agree. A few weeks ago (admittedly flying Comair/BA from JNB) I requested a seat nearer the front:

Employee #1 "They're all full"
Employee #2 "I can only see middle seats"
Employee #3 "Of course, row 6 is completely empty, which would you like?"
