I frequently schedule connections right at the minimum connect times (including 30-40 minutes at IAH, SFO, and ORD when legal) and have yet to miss a flight. I understand the risk I am taking (and allow extra time for the last flight of the night or when my arrival time is critical), and I would be tremendously frustrated if that option went away. I'd much much much rather occasionally miss a connection than be forced into longer connecting times and the resulting longer total travel times or fewer connection options. I still very much believe in the notion that "if you never miss a flight, you're spending too much time in airports".
