Travel insurance
If you paid with a premium credit card and if you're in the middle of a round-trip (it's your homebound, not your outbound flight that's nearing) then your insurance will be the answer. And BTW you're obliged, under its terms, to tell the insurance company, as soon as practicable, about the situation.
My Premium card has paid out in full (refunded existing ticket), when:
- I got sick just before a flight
- my elderly mother had an accident just before I was to go away
- I had an injury abroad
But it's important that you tell them promptly when things start to go sideways.
BTW I recommend that everyone with a credit card that offers "insurance" actually read the Insurance Certificate. These guys are very fussy about what you have to do when something goes wrong. If you don't do things their way, they don't pay. The booklet is a good read.
