Put another way, s/he who rides their high horse has a longer distance to fall. I find a cheerful friendly and requesting attitude works far better than the DYKWIA bat or threats, implied or explicit.
But no harm in sharing with a worried attitude the baby could be contagious... and in being very appreciative for those who help. If it's not listed as a condition in the CofC or the detailed fare rules, it's a favor.

Agreed re: helpful EXP agents. That said, understand that the airline doesn't owe you any type of waiver/favor. Therefore, approaching it from the perspective of knowing that and asking for them to make an exception under the circumstances will get you far further than calling and saying you have a sick baby and they are morally, etc. obligated to change your flight for free.
