Also, op-up as GR on some routes is very possible, such as ORD flights during student rush is one that specifically comes to mind. On that flight I've even seen regular AM (not MPC) members being upgraded, so I am sure that every single GR on the flight would have got one too.
Unless the US$50 is a hardship, I'd go ahead and do it as soon as you can.
To each and everyone's own...but as I mentioned in other threads, I see very little use in priority check-in and boarding. Especially when OP's only travelling 1-2x YYZ-HKG a year.

I'm not 100% positive....but I think it's determined on the same month your AM's usually end. Ie. Asia Miles expiring March 2016. Then It's April 1 - March 31
