If your friend is adamant on meeting you at the airport, I suggest what he does is clear immigration and head over to Terminal 2. T2 has a food court with a bunch of restaurants and is probably a bit quieter than arrivals. He can grab a bite and sit down while he waits for you.

If he has enough time he can even watch a movie at the IMAX in T2.
