On the re-route I mentioned, when we arrived in NRT agents had all of our re-route info printed out. There were a couple of others on the flight who didn't like their routing and were able to get the overnight accommodation rather than the option given (I think they were given NRT-HNL-LAX-ATL and they chose NRT-ATL the next day). But if the OP was just handed their new BPs and an itinerary they may not have been aware or able to ask for something else.
