As to westbound flights, I tend to stay awake for most of the flight, with perhaps a 30' nap or two, try to get some afternoon / evening sunlight into my eyes, have a very light supper (mostly carbohydrates, easy to digest, no bug beef etc. dinners) stay up until 9 PM and then sleep - I usually awake at 6:00 AM local time when I do that, and after that I just get my body on local schedule. (On the reverse redeye, I tend to sleep and when I arrive at the eastbound destination, try to get some protein, coffee and if possible a shower...) This has worked reasonably well for the last fifty years or so.
