Looks like it is located right beside Campo Grande so not on the beach nor in the historic centre but central to getting to both and I think Campo Grande is the setting off point for one of the major Carnival parades - not sure if it passes by the hotel though.

Pricing starts around $170/night - brings back memories of Rio 5 years ago

It looks like the Starwood brand adds about 80% value to the tariffs when you include bf and taxes . Can you bring your own Sheraton Sweet Sleeper Bed and pay the old rates
This is the old Tropical hotel and hopefully they have done some renovations. I have stayed there once few years ago.

Salvador da Bahia, the first capitol of Brazil, is definitely worth a visit (been there several times) and the Pelourinho is beautiful. The carnival is very different and is aimed more to Brazilians than the Rio one.

There are quite a few destination that are short distance from Salvador such us the Morro do Sao Paulo (not to confuse with the Sao Paulo the city) and Costa do Sauipe.

Not sure if they are going to bring the Tropical hotel in Manaus under the Starwood flag at tome point as well.
