The agent was wrong and it is not surprising that they couldn't auto-price it. But if you're satisfied with just VIE then so be it.

Another interesting tidbit, the flight out was going through YYZ (Toronto) on Air Canada. Apparently that is treated as a domestic carrier or something and the layover couldn't be more than 4 hours. So what was originally a 6 hour layover there was too long, but we worked it out.
This is also untrue as a rule. Because it is an international itinerary any connection along the way can be up to 24 hours.
