Does such a service exist in Adelaide?
Other option is to use the hotel's laundry service. Will be more expensive that the other 2 options, but same effect as the outside "laundry service" you asked about. I think you can do the latter, but finding a laundry convenient to your hotel may be the difficulty.
BTW a belated hands up for Canberra. We Aussies love to bag our 'national capital', but for a US visitor interested in history etc as you say, it has the requisite set of National Museum, National Library, War Memorial, Parliament House old and new etc etc & nice lakeside walks. Plus the Australia/USA memorial. Driving to and from Sydney is a good idea, but not the same day - too tiring and you probably won't want to drive at night. Spend the night in Canberra and do 2 days there.
Also, probably too late and a bit out of the way, but you can't beat Tasmania for a terrific friendly
compact holiday destination. Lots of colonial history, rustic villages, rugged mountains, native animals abound (Tasmanian Devil

) heaps of wineries in a small area (and much less 'commecial' than most of the SA.Vic/NSW wineries .. I mean in respect if tasting fees etc).
One hour flight from melbourne to Hobart, less if you fly into Launceston.
