I think NH will comp a hotel room if a same day connection doesn't exist, although I can't seem to find any documentation of this. With PEK - NRT - JFK, NH 956 + NH 1010 is a valid same day connection, so NH won't comp you a hotel room because you have chosen to fly NH 906 from PEK to NRT.
