I have read this but not tried it so cannot personally confirm it.

If you have booked a US only ticket, you would have paid $5 for the security fee. If you cancel online, BA regulars say that the miles revert to your account immediately. You forfeit the $5 fee. That's cheaper than calling and paying the cancellation fee.
