Read the section "Upgrading with Avios" on this page:

http://www.britishairways.com/travel...z/public/en_gb

Upgrades are available from the following booking classes:
- British Airways: J, C, D, R, I, W, E, T, Y, B, H
i.e. Y, B and H are the only Economy classes you can UuA from.

I'd love to use my avois on leisure trips (we go away 3-4 times a year), but there is never any avois upgrade availability
Perhaps you can post some routes/dates and we can help you look?

I keep hearing that there is "no" Avios availability to/from SIN, yet I checked for Avios availability on a date I will be flying and found "FS1 CS9 WS4 YS9" on the 747 and "FS3 CS2 WS9 YS3" on the 77W service.

You read that right, 9 redemption seats in CW to SIN...
