I went with an Episcopal church group, but we stayed in a Roman Catholic convent that had spacious, air-conditioned rooms, a lovely courtyard, and a decent continental breakfast. Hostal Santa Brigida in the Old City, equidistant from the Plaza Vieja and the Plaza San Francisco.
