It may be déclassé of me, but I use public transportation every day in Tokyo, and in my case it is in fact the fastest and easiest way to get where I need to go.
The OP was considering renting a car and dropping it off each day as a cost saving measure, which is a bad idea. That locals "of means" drive around Tokyo is irrelevant to this thread.
