It is possible, but they changed the logic on this because at one point they offered ultra cheap upgrades just prior to departure to just get some extra revenue out of the premium cabin. The elites complained loudly about it, as it effectively blocked out any chance of getting an upgrade. After that, they changed it so that it reserves a certain number of seats for upgrades and the price is based on your chances of being upgraded without buying up.
