United.com ticket booking questions

This is the first time I tried to use united.com to book a ticket...

When I searched via united.com for a round trip to KUL with 1 stopover at CDG on Jan 16, 2014:

EWR-CDG (2 days stopover), CDG-KUL, KUL->EWR

there was only one choice/flight for the EWR-CDG segment, and there was no saved award.

However when I just searched for EWR-CDG on Jan 16/2014, I saw a bunch of flights with saver awards. Is this a system problem or it is always like this? Is this means I can't use united.com and I have to call to book my ticket? If I call, will the agent faces the same problem? Is there a way on united.com for me to enter each one way segment I found and make them a round trip award ticket? Thanks.
