Or do as I did, rent an iPhone SIM card from GAC for my iPhone 4 and have all my calls to my home SIM card forwarded to the rented one. In this way you can do local calls and access Internet via their 3G network.
The ones I rent from will send your order to the hotel that you stay so I never need to collect from the post office as they won't be open on non working hours, it's waiting inside my hotel room. This service is FOC.
I was going to chime in to recommend Rentafone Japan as well. The free delivery and return postage is convenient. If you're going to meet up with people, having a local phone is essential.
Once spent 45 minutes walking around Shibuya station trying to find a friend I was meeting up with. If we hadn't had phones, it'd have taken hours.
