Exit checks are VERY rare but they do happen (and are permissable by law in either direction). I kind of doubt the US would make too much a fuss over a Canadian expired PPT anyways but I suppose that depends on the agent. You don't technically need a PPT to enter by land if you have another form of acceptable ID so hence I doubt it would be a huge issue. Flying is another matter as you have the airline to deal with!
