Elite status and paid tickets overrides a complimentary upgrade it seems.. or is this generally the case and rule? Should a seat selection become contract when selected?

I'm glad for as long as I remember when I get 4 seats together, we all remain together when travelling, and I wouldn't mind moving around the plane, as long as we all have seats together.
