BA only offers paid seat selection before check-in to non status holders. The seat map has no relation to the numbers on the flight, so I would stick with the exit row for now.
Expertflyer may be able to give you an idea. eg. It will show you if there are fewer than 9 seats left, but if it's showing 9 there may be 9 left or 150, you just can't tell.
