Like others, I too have experienced somebody working within a large company who is focused on the company's "rules" and overlooks the fact that they're perpetrating a basic breach of contract.
At one level it's almost funny and I hope the OP obtains a refund with a minimum of fuss.
Yes, in the end I did get charged the original rate (L class) that I had reserved. However, since they wouldn't upgrade that rate, I abandoned that reservation and downgraded to (a new) F class reservation at a lower rate. The contract that I drove out with was the F class rate/contract, but they decided after the fact (without my consent) that they wanted me to have L class rate.
