Actually, entering Canada with an expired passport is still considered proper documentation. I asked an acquaintance who was an ex-CBSA agent and he confirmed that, as a Canadian, having an expired passport is absolutely fine. There's no requirement to have an up-to-date passport as a Canadian and all they want to be sure of is your status.
