You're proving my point. It's not the legacies that are setting the fares on VX's routes; it's VX. VX has a CASM of ~4 cents less than the legacies so there's no reason why VX can't make money.
The fact that VX is not profitable is entirely VX management's fault. You are trying to make other airlines the bad guy here instead of placing the blame where it belongs; squarely on VX management.

VX target market is younger, more urban, tech savvy travelers who are looking for more of an upscale experience. Many of the young travelers in my office love the airline, while many old farts stick with American, United, Delta.

My main airline is American, but I do enjoy flying Virgin, the service is better, as the cabin and ground crew is young, energetic, eager to please.

The food and wine is better as well. ^^^
Should VX fail (I expect them to; there is no sign that they are addressing their core problems), it will not be the fault of the front line staff. By all accounts, VX delivers a top quality product that the average VX employee should be rightfully proud of.
