Just going to add that avoiding this scenario is one advantage to same-day changes. That confirms you on the flight and you get put on the upgrade list. If you have a choice fare, or willing to pay $75, then there are many reasons this is favorable to standing by.

That being said, as an EXP, I have yet to SDC and clear an upgrade. Came #1 on the list once though.
