I would urge you to do a "same day change" on United and take an earlier flight from SAN. I believe with United you can call UA up to 24 hours in advance, pay $75, and get a confirmed seat on an earlier flight the same day as your original booking. One hour is not nearly enough time for check in for your SQ flight even if you didn't have to worry about a connection.
