I've since learnt to make them myself. Malasadas to the Hawaiians and Portuguese, Puff-puff to the Africans.
I may have had them, but I'd also recommend the Okinawan sata andagi, aka the Okinawan dango). The yuzu-flavored one, if you like that taste, was quite the treat.
