I think you mean linked not attached as in physically attached ? you are correct ESTA must reflect the exact passport details

they should be aware a late change in some details may trigger a more thorough check at the airport.

i altered my passport number on my saved Virgin details just before a trip and had a nightmare...no OLCI available, a lot of stares at the airport check in, a secondary inspection at security and then a real going over at the gate. I was obvioulsy tagged because I changed numbers late
