I'm not sure how pax who get op-up'ed are treated. My suspicion is that they do not appear on the upgrade list since they are manually booked into J, but I may be wrong. Has never happened to me on UA so I have no experience .

IME--

I recently used copay and miles to upgrade HKG-SFO, SEA-NRT and both were upgraded months ahead before the flight. Both had me on the upgrade list as cleared on the mobile app and on the screen at the gate.

I did get an op-up for ORD-HKG recently as well and was never cleared on the upgrade list nor was listed there (just given a boarding pass into R).
