Buying a revenue C ticket for the entire itin was less than that (about $3200). As a side note, what is the deal with award inventory to/from Europe in September? I am having problems finding anything; right now, I have my wife booked in Y on completely different flights than me with the intention of having ExpertFlyer tell me when I need to call UA to switch her. Seat maps are nearly empty in all cabins, and UA is selling plenty of discounted Y tickets and even some discounted C tickets... but no saver C, very little saver F, and not much more saver Y (in fact, almost all the saver inventory is on partners).
