Another vote for Freiburg with great rail & bus connections over the area.
Great scenery and cultural activities as well as thermal pools a short train ride away in Bad Kronzingen or some picturesque towns such as Staufen and Freiburg itself.
Love the area and i'm sure you'll have a great trip whatever the weather.
