ctrip does ask for birthday and passport number.
But it's not clear that information (or accurate information) is required or not - when I provided it my recollection is that it booted me into a child fare. Next time I'll know better!
(I also don't know for sure if I actually ended up paying more . . . it may simply have been the hassle of having to book the ticket separately for my daughter, meaning different PNR, and no preassignment of seats, that was the hassle I recall).
