The fraction of trip duration (in daylight) you'll be close enough to see the ocean when facing west is actually quite a small one. You don't want to miss (all) of it, but an east-facing window wouldn't be a tragedy. The parlor car and/or sightseeing car are good places from which to enjoy the scenery if car orientation foils your best planning.
