I rent from Hertz sometimes and generally choose airline miles as the option. I guess I forgot 1x and now I have Hertz points. Are these more valuable than miles? Would it be better to collect these over collecting airline miles? I generally don't get too many air miles because I use CDPs that are not the airline CDPs since I get much lower rates that way.

You can earn airline miles without using the airline's CDP; the CDP generally only gives you access to bonus miles (discount is often negligible).
That said, I now earn Hertz points because they used to have lots of promos and through programs like e-Rewards I've earned quite a few points over the last year; most of my points are from e-Rewards, as a matter of fact. Depending on when and where you use them, they can be extremely valuable since it's the same number of points, regardless of location and time (in general; of course there are peak periods with higher rates).
